WEDDING Ring FAQs

Your questions about wedding rings answered here with our wedding ring FAQs.

Diamonds On Richmond has a range of diamond set wedding rings and classic wedding bands to suit all styles, and available in 9, 14 or 18 carat white, yellow and rose gold, or platinum. All of our rings are made to order in our workshop in Auckland.

Diamonds On Richmond also has a range of Classic Wedding Bands and diamond set rings for guys, in a range of different widths and styles to suit your personal preference.

All of our wedding rings are made in one of our Auckland workshops, where precious metals are formed and polished, and diamonds can be set.

It varies greatly depending on culture and tradition, but in New Zealand, we've noticed that the wedding bands are often considered as part of the wedding budget and therefore paid for jointly by the couple themselves.

Yes, most often couples pick their wedding bands at the same time, which is a fun experience to share together as part of the wedding planning.

No, couples do not necessarily need matching wedding bands. Quite often they will have different tastes. DOR has a wide range of ring styles and widths in diamond set rings and classic wedding bands, to suit both sides of the aisle.

Considering the design of your engagement ring is important when choosing a wedding band. You can either choose to match the two rings or have them contrasting. Chat with your Client Manager instore to learn more about your options.

If your engagement ring was from Diamonds On Richmond, it will most likely be designed to sit a wedding ring flush. If your ring was made elsewhere, one of our Client Managers will be able to help advise what kind of wedding ring can sit flush, or whether you'll need a curved ring.

The easiest way is to book in to see one of our Client Managers who can measure your ring size in store.

Yes, we highly recommend matching the metal of your rings, as having the same metal grade will mean both rings wear similarly and will prevent one damaging the other. Choosing the same metal grade will also give the closest match in terms of metal colour as well.

Common ideas for engravings include your partner's name, the couple's initials or the date of the wedding. You could also consider a word or phrase that means something to your relationship, such as 'Forever Yours'.

Neither one is better than the other as they each have their benefits. Platinum is stronger than gold, but is a rarer precious metal, so is sometimes more expensive. Although not as strong, gold is actually more scratch resistant than platinum, can sometimes cost less and has more colour options (rose, yellow or white) with shades depending on the gold carat.

We suggest people start to organise their wedding rings about 3 months before they intend to exchange them over vows. This gives enough time to choose your favourite style and 5-6 weeks for our workshop to craft them to perfection. If you do need it sooner, we can drop everything to help, but urgency fees may apply.

Wedding rings start at around $400 for a fine plain band in 9 carat gold (typical female size M).

Diamond-set wedding rings start from around $1800.

The price of wedding rings is highly dependent on the weight of metal used in the band, so price will increase as size, width and thickness increase. An average spend for a women's wedding ring is around $1500-2000 and for a men's wedding ring around $2000-3000.

Guy's rings typically start from $1000 but are usually around $2000-3000. These prices vary greatly depending on finger size, thickness and metal grade. Send us an enquiry for a personalised quote!

The amount of gold in a wedding ring will depend on the metal carat. 9 Carat is 37.5% pure gold, with 14 Carat containing 57.5% pure gold and 18 Carat using 87.5% pure gold.

Yes, wedding rings can be resized to make them larger or smaller. Depending on the number of sizes needed, this can either be done by 'working' the ring (stretching) or by cutting and adding or removing material.

The origin of rings dates back to the Ancient Egyptians, who exchanged rings of braided string. Precious metal rings can be traced back to the Greeks and Romans who exchanged rings as marital dowry, but records of double ring ceremonies, where rings are exchanged between both spouses date back to Europe in the 1800s.

Ancient civilizations started the tradition of wearing the wedding ring on the fourth finger because they believed that there was a vein in this finger 'Vena Amoris' (Latin for the “vein of love”) that ran directly to the heart.
