THE LOW DOWN

At DOR we offer both mined and lab-grown diamonds. The choice is yours!

Lab grown diamonds are exactly the same as mined diamonds - right down to their chemical and optical properties.

Mined diamonds and lab diamonds are cut, polished and graded in exactly the same way.

In our experience, our clients that choose mined diamonds often place value on a more rare, traditional option.

Whereas, our clients that choose lab diamonds tend to consider sustainability and place value on larger, higher grade diamonds, which are more competitively priced.

LAB GROWN DIAMOND FAQs

We're here to answer all your questions about lab-grown and mined diamonds.

Both lab diamonds and mined diamonds are exactly the same in both their chemical and optical properties. Laboratory grown diamonds and mined diamonds look exactly the same, even to the trained eye.

Even though the two diamonds are optically and chemically the same, lab diamonds are laser inscribed on the girdle stating that it is a lab grown diamond. This can only be read under a microscope.

Apart from the laser inscription, the only other way to identify a lab-grown diamond over a mined diamond is with specialised equipment.

Yes, they are real diamonds. They are exactly the same as mined diamonds, apart from where they come from. Lab diamonds are identical to natural diamonds in all of their physical and chemical properties. Every lab grown diamond is unique, with it's own individual inclusions, colour and cut.

Yes, they are great for engagement rings. With a lab-grown diamond engagement ring, you will achieve a larger and higher-graded diamond for your price point (when compared to mined).

Yes, they are as good as mined diamonds, as they are exactly the same apart from how they are made. They have the same hardness so will stand the test of time and have the same optical and chemical properties.

Yes, they are. As they are exactly the same as mined diamonds, they are a great alternative to mined diamonds if you are looking for a more sustainable option, or looking for a larger, higher-grade diamond for what you want to spend.

The only difference between a lab diamond and a mined diamond is where it comes from. Lab-grown diamonds are grown in a lab from seed diamonds, under high temperature and pressure, mimicking the forces of the earth. Mined diamonds come from mines deep within the earth, where diamonds have been formed by temperature and pressure over millions of years.

Lab grown diamonds are real diamonds, which are the hardest material known to man. So, just like mined diamonds, if looked after properly, lab diamond engagement rings and lab diamond jewellery will maintain their brilliance for a lifetime.

Pricing for a 1.00 ct lab-grown diamond engagement ring starts from around $4500 and increases from there, based on the grade of diamond you choose.

Mined diamond engagement rings with a 1.00 carat round brilliant start anywhere from $12,500, with the price is also dependent on the grade.

Cheaper diamonds are available but these are not typically the quality that we recommend at Diamonds On Richmond.

Pricing for a 2.00 ct lab-grown diamond engagement ring starts from around $9,000 and increases from there, based on the grade of diamond you choose.

Mined diamond engagement rings with a 2.00 carat round brilliant start anywhere from $40,000, and price is also dependent on the grade.

Cheaper diamonds are available but these are not typically the quality that we recommend at Diamonds On Richmond.

The best place to buy lab-created diamonds is from a diamond jeweller who specialises in both mined and lab grown diamonds, otherwise, you may receive biased information about one or the other.

As lab grown diamonds grow in popularity, more and more celebrities are choosing to wear these sustainable diamonds. Celebrities such as Rihanna, Lady Gaga, Emma Watson & Meghan Markle have been seen wearing lab diamond rings and jewellery on the red carpet.

Yes, the lab grown diamonds that we sell at DOR are certified by a reputable grading house (such as IGI or GIA), in exactly the same way that mined diamonds are certified.

Lab grown diamonds are considered eco-friendly. Research suggests that lab diamonds take approximately 7 times less energy to produce than mined diamonds, so are considered a sustainable option.

No, lab-created diamonds are not to be confused with Cubic Zirconia, or any other diamond simulants for that matter. Like CZ stones and other diamond replicas, artificial diamonds do not have the same chemical and optical properties as lab or mined diamonds.
